Design as Protest (DAP) is a coalition of BIPOC designers mobilizing strategy to dismantle the privilege and power structures that use architecture and design as tools of oppression. As a Core Organizer, I planned and facilitated two Electoral Days of Action around the 2020 US General Election with Preeti Sodhi. This work tied into my work as a Field Organizer for the NC Coordinated/Biden Campaign in the Fall of 2020.

The first Electoral Day of Action was focused on voter registration, amplifying grassroots voting rights organizations, and calling to support get out the vote efforts in North Carolina. We created a sharable voting guide, which was transformed by DAP Founder De Nichols into graphics above.

Electoral Day of Action #2 was focused on creating slogans for tactile protest signs that visualize political issues. We used Miro to create slogans, which were later designed and installed by other DAP members around the country, as seen below in New Orleans.

Our Days of Action spurred continuing DAP conversations on the role of designers and planners in civic activism and building political power, especially as a BIPOC community.
